With the formula version the numbers update automatically if you've used a dynamic data range ( = select a single cell from your data and press Ctrl + T to turn it into a table ). Keep in mind, that a pie chart can only visualize a single data series. The pivot table solution is super easy but if the values change you're going to have to refresh the pivot table to get the new values. Start with a blank worksheet in Excel and enter your data. The COUNTIF formula gives you the numeric values. In Excel 365 there's the UNIQUE function as well but with older versions you're going to have to enter the unique values manually. To create 2-D Pie chart in Excel, first select the Chart data and go to INSERT menu and click on Insert Pie or Doughnut Chart command dropdown under Charting. The pivot table is by far the easiest way to get all the unique values. Click the Pie option, and your chart is created.

I'll show you how to create a chart that isn't a Quick Analysis option, shortly. In the Insert tab, from the Charts section, select the Insert Pie or Doughnut Chart option (it’s shaped like a tiny pie chart). For more information about the different options you can choose from, see Copy an Excel chart. While your data is selected, in Excel’s ribbon at the top, click the Insert tab.
Click Paste Options next to the chart, and choose how you want to paste the chart. Open PowerPoint, click where you want to paste the chart, and press Ctrl+V. Excel displays recommended options based on the data in the cells you select, so the options won't always be the same. In Excel, click the chart that you want to copy to another Office program, and press Ctrl+C. The same thing can be done without pivot tables as well but you're going to have to create the two columns yourself. To create a pie chart, select the cells you want to chart. You'll end up with two columns which you can visualize in a chart. Locate the Labels group and click on the Layout tab. Pivot table puts the text values to the row labels but when you drag the same column to the values field as well the pivot table counts the number of values. Clicking on the data series or a specific data point will open the Chart Tools tab. That being said you can however create a pivot table from your text column. I don't think you can create a chart using text values alone.
